The “Reason Rally” claims to promote “celebration of fact-driven public policy, the value of critical thinking, and the voting power of secular Americans.” Richard recently shared a video that reveals that the entire rally seems dedicated to promoting gay rights, diversity, and feminism.

At the risk of falling into the “no true Scotsman” fallacy, this rally seems to have little to with “New Atheism.”

The most prominent New Atheists are Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and the late Christopher Hitchens. Popularizers include Bill Maher, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and Penn Jillette. I have my issues with many of these speakers, but without exception they are critical of modern feminism and regard Islam, in practice, as worse for civilization than Christianity.

In contrast, many of the speakers at the Reason Rally are not even atheists; they simply all hate conservative Christians. My racist and sexist intuition told me that the non-Whites and females were most likely to not be “real” atheists, so I looked into all of them who did not have an explicit position like “President of the Black Humanist Foundation.”

Here’s what I found.

Margaret Cho:

He said I could use his name in vain or whatever. He just wants me to use it. He loves me. So fuck you. And I guess he loves you too. Even though you are fake Christian assholes. If you were truly Christians, you would let gays get married, and send them fucking presents from Bed Bath and Beyond! If you truly believed in Jesus, you would try to be like him and love us, fags and dykes and feminists all.

SS: On the song The Book of Life you say, “Remember God is in you, you don’t have to search outside the Earth/Search inside the verse.” How do you explain to someone who was born in a Judeo-Christian society that God is inside them?

Killah Priest: You gotta take it back to the basics. Christ said, “Seek ye the kingdom of heaven, and the kingdom of heaven is within yourself.” When you really dive into the scriptures it says the kingdom of heaven is inside you. You can feel that because of the way Christ dropped it.

SS: You’ve been associated with the Black Hebrew Israelites and the Nations of Gods and Earths. What is your religion or way of life?

Killah Priest: I don’t have any religion. I’m Hebrew by nationality. My religion is just God. I have no religion, I just believe in the Most High.

For those who are unaware, “Black Hebrew Israelites” are the crazy Blacks who harass people outside the subway station quoting bible verses that show that blacks are the “Real jews.”

Raekwon:

Raekwon’ came from part of the Nation of Islam—The ‘Five Percent Nation’ . . . Though he’s not connected with the Nation of Islam, Raekwon recently became a Muslim. He described his conversion to Islam as more influential on his world view than his music.“Allah has given me the power to do what I do . . . but at the same token, I’ve been doing this for a long time, it’s my artistry,” he said. And Rae isn’t going to change his bragging, swaggering lines just because he’s “pure now.”

Tulsi Gabbard

In the elections held the following month, Gabbard became the first—and only—Hindu ever elected to Congress. Gabbard isn’t, however, your typical Hindu—at least she’s not what is normally associated with being a Hindu. The GZA

As the lecture opened up to questions, a crowd member asked the GZA about being raised as a Christian. The GZA responded, “It is what it is.” He has picked up pieces of spirituality from other things because it makes more sense to him, concluding that, “God is pure consciousness. I don’t think I would have to die to go to heaven or hell. I’m just not going for that, so I stepped away from that. However, the more you learn about other things, the easier it is to get along with someone that is from a different religion or background.”

Kelly Carlin:

As Kelly’s story progressed, I could understand why George deemed her the shaman of the family. I found a narrative that proves how “none” does not mean “nothing,” as though without god there remains this void that needs to be filled. Instead, she gave me a glimpse into the spiritual life of the “Nones,” the fastest growing group in the spectrum of belief systems, often quoted by those religious leaders who lean somewhat left of center, and who ply their wares on the progressive Christian author/speaker circuit.
