Those of us in the real Right, and in the real Left, too, recoil at this sort of Whiggish interpretation of history, but for most people, it’s just commonsense. Some people and ideas are “ahead of their time,” and some are “on the wrong side of history.” The vast majority of Westerners achieve an intuitive understanding of this at a very young age, and whether they grow up to become university professors or adults who are unable to locate France on a map, most maintain this belief all their lives.
